I love this picture! A very happy bee! It started out being an amazing year. We came out of winter storage with 11 hives that we over-wintered and they all survived! Tim hit the ground running thinking this was going to be the best year yet. BUT, Mother Nature had other plans. It has been SO dry, and SO hot, that the bees are having a hard time finding nectar! No nectar...no honey! We had a total of 34 hives at one time, but some of the hives weren't making it, so Tim has combined several hives to hopefully strengthen them. Been a tough year with queens too. Lost several queens early and Tim tried to order some. No luck! Seems they are having queen problems this year. and there were none to be had. Tim has had some luck grafting his own queens, and he did a great job raising our own queens to supply our hives. We have had a little rain the past week, but the hives are still weak. He was hoping to get 3 extractions this year...we may only get 1 at this point and we are almost out of last years stock. First extraction will be in August, so not long to hold out, but still not where we wanted to be with Do This Honey this year. We should be well into the "flow" now and it is getting late for our babies to gather. The flow here for nectar is short anyway, and this year it is not looking good. A few of the hobbyists up here have already given up this year. Tim keeps working it, but there is only so much he can do. I have been saying prayers for our little busy bees! I am hoping we have a decent year for harvest. If the hives don't get strengthened, we may not have anything to winter this year, or they may be so weak they might not make it anyway. It is a very sad time right now. What we hoped would be our best year, is now not looking good. We will have enough for our CSA people! I am selfish in the fact that I will make sure I have some for me! We will have to see how much we get to see if we will continue sales. It has been a very stressful few weeks.
Just an update from Do This Honey. Wish I could share better news.
Have a great 4th of July weekend all!
