It has been an interesting few days here. Weather has been wonderful and the bees are out and about. This is great for the bees...Bert is not as happy. He has been very docile the last couple of days, and I think he has been stung several times already. He usually keeps his distance from the hives, but he will have to get use to the bees again, especially since he follows Tim everywhere and Tim has been inside the loop building with the bees! When the hives are set out he knows his boundaries, but all of those bees enclosed he is having a hard time dealing with them. Tim has still only been stung once, but I keep finding dead bees in the house. I think they just hitch a ride on him and then die when they get in here and fall off! I did find 2 this morning where Bert's blanket is on the couch. I am guessing he has been stung at least 2 and I think 3 times already this year. He'll learn. At least the squirrels and birds are active and he does have other things to chase. Even had deer crossing through a few nights.
Here is the thing I don't like right now...SKUNKS! Had one here the other night (he put up quite a stink, even in the house), and I saw one dead on the road already yesterday. I think we are going to have a problem this year. The bees were shut up the other night so the skunk did not get a snack, but they will be back. Tim trapped a few last year, I am guessing traps will go out right away this year. Skunks love bees! Not even interested much in the honey...they eat the bees! They will scratch at the hives until the bees come to check it out and suck them up as they leave the hive. I know they get stung, but they don't seem to care at all. They can really devastate a hive. It is just too early to be worrying about skunks already! YUK!
