Bees & Honey

Summer Spirals Down

Posted by Tammy Chapman on

Extraction is done and now the rendering of wax and the winterizing of bees begins.  All of our CSA orders have been filled, so things have calmed down a bit.  Honey harvest was better than expected, but still worse than we had hoped.  It was a good year considering the first real rain in months was this weekend!  Got about an inch of rain and it was appreciated.  Don't know if you can see the picture of my "web" in the crook of the hummer feeder hook!  It was foggy, and sprinkling rain and it was beautiful.  Not big on...

Birds & Bees in Accord

Tim finished extraction yesterday.  Today is clean up, and finishing shipping orders.  I have been bottling our CSA orders all week.  Lots of honey being shared!  I have to admit, we did get more honey than expected and it is so good!  I think it is the best flavor yet!  All natural, and I don't know what makes the difference, but this year is the best!   The hummers and bees have come to an accord in "sharing" the feeders.  I have moved feeders, taken them down for days, changed the nectar formula...I have been fighting this for a week!  I...

Angry Bees & Cake

Nick came up this last weekend to help Tim with honey extraction.  It has been a tough year and it is not getting any easier.  The bees are MAD this year that Tim is taking the honey.  Usually he puts them into temporary hives with feed then takes the honey frames, extracts the honey, then puts the fresh frames back in and transfers the bees back to their hives, while keeping the feed onboard since the nectar flow is over.  Usually they are happy bees.  They get fresh hives, food close, and they can start putting on honey stores for...

Extraction Begins - Hummers Abound!

This is my new baby.  A large Strawberry hummingbird feeder.  Although I love the new feeder that was given to me...I LOVE the "Sarge" on top of the pole!  He used to come to the window feeder.  We call him Sarge, because he is short and stocky and moves for no one!  They can't run him off the feeder!  He just sits there until HE is done!  Now Sarge has taken over the Strawberry!  I mean TAKEN OVER!  He sits up there on the pole, and if another hummer comes along, he bombs him away, then he takes a drink,...

Hummers & Ants & Dens...Oh My!

Posted by Tammy Chapman on

We have bees in that equation too!  It has been an interesting weekend.  I have never had an ant problem, especially with my Hummingbird feeders.  But, I noticed the tree feeder wasn't being used much and it looked like something floating in it.  I went out and checked it and there was a ball (yes a ball) of ants in it!  They must have climbed in the feeder holes and balled up to stay alive!  YUK!  So, I brought the feeder in and cleaned it well, but started research on how to deal with my ant problem.  What I found...
