Bees & Honey

Next Generation

Posted by Tammy Chapman on

The girls (bees) are tucked away for the winter.  It's time to think about next year.  I love the picture of this little girl.  The next generation of beekeepers!  We need to do all we can to encourage and support anyone who wants to keep bees.  They are amazing creatures, and deserve the best care possible.  Our son Nick can keep bees.  I hope that someday he will pass that on to his children.  The love of nature is always welcomed!  Tim is very generous with his time and resources to help any others who keep bees.  He has gained...

Feeding "The Girls"

Posted by Tammy Chapman on

It was 66' here yesterday!  BEE autiful Day!  It is going to be in the 60's until at least Sunday.  The "Girls" are out and busy!  The problem now is that there is no nectar left.  This is when you have to supplement them.  Tim went out and "fed" them this morning.  Buckets with sugar water in them to keep them fed during this time and so that they won't break into their winter stores they have in the hives.  Tim was worried about winter being so early.  He was afraid they wouldn't have enough stores of honey in the...

Tim's Next New Toy

Posted by Tammy Chapman on

This is Tim's other new toy for the bees.  It is an infrared thermometer.  Another one of those items he has wanted for a few years to test the temperature in the hives.  Another item nice to have to keep happy bees!  He will be able to check hive temperature without opening up the hives in the cold and exposing them to the elements.  This will help keep the hives at a regular temperature and we will know if they get too hot (fans on) or too cold (fans off) heater on.  Tim has done a good job guessing the...

Tim's New Toy

Posted by Tammy Chapman on

Bees breathe.  They need fresh air even in hibernation.  Tim just got this in the mail to check their air.  There is a tube he can insert into the hive to check the oxygen level.  He leaves a small fan running to disperse and keep good air flowing, without being "windy" and too cold.  He does have a small heater if needed, but we don't run it all the time.  Just like us, they need fresh air to survive.  Tim has always worried about keeping fresh air moving and now he can actually check the hives to see how they...

Home for the Winter

Posted by Tammy Chapman on

The "girls" finally got moved into their winter storage yesterday.  I was wondering if we were going to be able to get it done.  Tim's injury from last weekend has not healed well enough for him to move them physically.  He had a friend come over on Wednesday to help him move them in, but Tim was not able to help enough to get it done.  Tim was very upset.  While he was trying to think of an option B, a friend of ours called for another reason.  He has a logging business, and he offered Tim his small loader! ...
