Bees & Honey

Stronger Bee Initiative

Posted by Tammy Chapman on

Bees were ordered yesterday for the CSA program.  Even after Tim placed the order we had several people inquire about the program and one more sign up!  Tim still has about a month, so ordering an extra box of bees wasn't a big deal yesterday.  But, he needs to plan and it sounds like it is going to be a wonderful year!  "The girls" are busy in the warm weather and sun.  Short cleansing flights and in for the night.  It was 39 and sunny yesterday so lots of activity.  I didn't go down to the loop building, but Tim...

Bee Updates

It is sunny and 28 right now.  Suppose to get to 38 today.  Will be in the low to mid 40's and sunny the rest of the week!  The bees are getting anxious to bee out and about!  They begin to leave hibernation mode at 40'.  Now I am sure we have some winter weather left.  But at times like this week, the bees are ready for a "cleansing" flight.  Yes...that means exactly what you think!  They get out, spread their wings, and go poo poo.  You try being communed with thousands of your family all winter and see if...

The Girls Check In

Tim figures that we/ourselves go through about 3 pounds of honey every 10 days or so.  That is a full quart glass canning jar!  Yup...good thing we raise bees because we do love the end product.  That doesn't include my Arthritis Helper that I take every morning in my tea.  We are definitely "honey people."   It has been so brutally cold here for 2 weeks.  Not above zero and into the -30/-40's at night.  Yesterday it got to +8 with sunshine!  Tropical heat wave!  Tim took a walk down to the loop building to check on "the girls".  Several of...

Next Generation

Posted by Tammy Chapman on

The girls (bees) are tucked away for the winter.  It's time to think about next year.  I love the picture of this little girl.  The next generation of beekeepers!  We need to do all we can to encourage and support anyone who wants to keep bees.  They are amazing creatures, and deserve the best care possible.  Our son Nick can keep bees.  I hope that someday he will pass that on to his children.  The love of nature is always welcomed!  Tim is very generous with his time and resources to help any others who keep bees.  He has gained...
