Bees & Honey

Bee Predators

Posted by Tammy Chapman on

Obviously, you don’t want skunks on your property, especially if you have bees and a curious puppy dog!   You most definitely don’t want them near your beehives. Skunks are after the actual bees for their meal. These nocturnal creatures will seek out your hives at night, scratching at the beehives until the bees come out. Elevating your hives should do the trick to keep pesky skunks out. When the hive is raised, the skunks will have to stand on their hind legs to reach it. They have to expose their tender underbelly to the possibility of bee stings.  As you...

Seek & Bees Will Find

Posted by Tammy Chapman on

Tim was busy this morning putting hives outside.  Beautiful day and suppose to be this way for awhile now.  Barely getting to freezing at night.  The girls have been busy!  Had a few bees up by the windows this morning and they were so laden with pollen that they looked like bumble bees!  They will be upset for a few hours while they find their hives again.  My poor barn makes a wonderful backdrop I think.  The hives were only moved from the loop building, which is on the other side of the barn to this staging area.  Don't worry...

Rainy Days & Monday

Posted by Tammy Chapman on

It has been raining steadily since last Tuesday night.  EVERYDAY!  No sunshine...but we do need the moisture!  Not freezing, all the snow is gone.  A bit muddy, but there are "green hairs" starting to push up in the field.  When the sun finally does break through it is going to green up fast.  Really looking forward to that! Busy weekend with the bees.  Tim picked up bees and delivered bees to those who had ordered.  There are several other "Hobby" bee keepers in the area and they only order 1-2 boxes of bees.  Since Tim makes the trip for us...

Sorry no post yesterday peeps.  Tim had an eye appointment about 3 hrs from us so it was a long, busy day.  Eye appointment went great, but since we were in a town with shopping (Costco, Fleet Farm) we did pick up a few extra items.  Got home and got everything put away, and today is prep/freezing day.  We buy in bulk and then I break things down for us and freeze.  I cleaned out the freezer on Tuesday (just the small upright freezer, it is the only one that you still have to defrost.)  I have a shelf all...

Tim's Girlfriend

Posted by Tammy Chapman on

This is Beatrice.  That is what I call all of Tim's girlfriends.  They are all bees!  He has been out working with them for almost a week now.  He sat down for dinner last night and this was his little hitchhiker.  She is just sitting on his knee, waiting for dinner.  He actually brings quite a few bees in with him.  Especially in spring when they are attracted to his warmth.  They just hang on and come in the house with him.  She did not sting him, most of them don't.  They just want a ride!  Usually they are pretty...
